I am a community builder and convener.
I invite people to reimagine their cities and their relationship to place through creativity and participatory design.
[freespace] is an international movement to turn vacant spaces into temporary community and cultural hubs. Ilana co-founded [freespace] in San Francisco in 2013, and it has since spread to 10 cities in eight countries.
The Hall was an interim-use (phase zero) project in a formerly vacant space in the heart of San Francisco's Mid-Market neighborhood. Ilana programmed the space with free events for the community, non-profit fundraisers, jobs fairs, and community-building experiences.
In 2018, Ilana and a team of international creative placemakers and humanitarians worked with refugees in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda to help identify and secure resources to build cultural infrastructure, such as an outdoor amphitheater.
